WOMEN’S empowerment in diverse fields took centre stage during the parade in New Delhi on the 75th Republic Day, marking several historic firsts. The impressive strides made by women in male-dominated domains were evident as their tri-services contingent led the impressive march-past on the Kartavya Path and female pilots enthralled the spectators with the flypast. The Central Armed Police Forces and Agniveers, too, were represented by women, who performed awe-inspiring stunts. The spotlight was also on female scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation as they highlighted the advances the nation has made in defence technology to bolster its military might.

‘Nari Shakti’ was also symbolised by the women who played a variety of traditional Indian musical instruments during the grand show, besides the dancers from across the country whose performances showcased our rich cultural heritage. The ‘Anant Sutra’ of hundreds of ethnic saris and drapes, woven and embroidered by generations of gifted artisans, formed a captivating backdrop.

However, there is still a long way to go as far as adequate representation of women in politics is concerned. The Women’s Reservation Bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament in September last year. It seeks to reserve one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and legislative assemblies for women. However, the Union Government has stated that the legislation will not be implemented before 2029 — after the completion of the delimitation exercise. The long delay will only act as a dampener for the women aspiring to carve a niche for themselves in the political arena.
