Malini Parthasarathy, former Chairperson and editor of The Hindu has criticised The Hindu’s current Director N. Murali’s statement that there has been an undeclared emergency for the last 10 years in the country and the media industry.

In an article dated 10th November 2023 in The Hindu newspaper, N. Murali was quoted saying that “that the country and the media have been facing an undeclared ‘Emergency’ during the last 10 years, similar to the period between 1975-1977, where there is threat of freedom of speech.”

Mr Murali did not directly refer to the election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. He was speaking at The Hindu Office & National Press Employees union’s celebrations in Chennai.

Ms Parthasarathy, who is also a relative of Mr Murali, responded to his newspaper article on X (formerly known as Twitter}. She said that The Hindu has been “misappropriated by a small coterie with a warped and prejudiced view of India’s political trends.” She also stated that The Hindu has “betrayed countless readers” by reporting “partisan political propaganda.”

No one really knows why Ms Parthasarathy has made these comments critical of her own former newspaper, but the media in Chennai is agog with speculation over the now-public family feud.

Mr Murali had also said that there have been “silent assaults” on journalists trying to report true events.

A second Director of The Hindu Group, N Ram, also speaking on the occasion added that the deteriorating condition of the media was reflected in the World Press Freedom Index 2023 in which India was ranked 161 out of 180 countries, in a survey carried out by Reporters Without Borders.

Still not clear what prompted Malini to accuse of her former organisation
